The Department of Medical Laboratory School started in 1954 EC, together with Medicine and Health Science is established in the form of college. In 1979/80 in Addis Ababa, the Addis Ababa University and Karl marks university in Germany signed an agreement to open Medical Laboratory department which classified microbiology, Immunology and parasitology departments, teaches students for a long time. It later continued to teach five department classes and one unit in its biomedical and laboratory school. Among those five departments Immunology and molecular biology was the leading department. The department of Immunology and Molecular Biology was opened in 2004 E.C by registering five MSc students. Till now 2017 E.C the department graduates more than 65 immunologists.
Currently, the department have one Immunology and one Molecular Biology Laboratory sections to provide for students a standard and community service. The department’s gives basic and common courses for MSc and BSc students for regular and post basic programs with other department partners. The department has spent more in research and community service that can solve the problem of the community over the thirteen years. In recent times, more than six (6) research results are published in the national and international journals each year by instructors.
We will be prepared to open a PhD (third degree) program soon.
According to human resources Immunology and molecular biology have one technical assistance, two assistance lecturer (now postgraduate students), six lecturer, two assistant professor with out PhD and two associate professors with PhD. Two lecturers study PhD program out of the country.
