About the department of Hematology and Immunohematology
The history of the Department of Hematology and Immunohematology is part of the history of the School of Biomedical and Laboratory Sciences. The Department of Medical Laboratory Technology was one of the earliest departments established in 1954 G.C. in just the same year as the Gondar Public Health College (GPHC) and Training Center (TC). The Hematology and Immunohematology department has been established as an independent Department at the time when school of Biomedical and Laboratory Sciences was established by the integration of the Department of Medical Laboratory Technology, and Department of Microbiology, Parasitology and Immunology in 2010/11 G.C. To strengthen its human resources and further intensify research efforts, the department has facilitated opportunities for 7 of its staff members to pursue their third-degree (PhD) studies abroad. Additionally, one instructor is currently studying for his PhD at the University of Gondar. Currently, the department has 2 assistant professors, 6 lecturers and 1 technical assistant.
At present, the Department offers one post graduate program, MSc in Clinical Hematology and Immunohematology since 2010 G.C. The first batch of students of this program graduated in 2012. The number of MSc graduates of the department until 2024/2025 G.C. academic year was 57 and currently 2 first year MSc students are attending their education. Moreover, the Department is involved in teaching undergraduate students in Medical Laboratory Science under the school of Biomedical and Laboratory Sciences and other related departments in College of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Besides advising both undergraduate and post graduate students’ thesis and seminar papers, the staff of the Department are actively involved in research activities. Regarding the community service, the staffs of the Department involve in diagnostic services, team training programs (TTP) and other professional activities. The Department has been striving to enhance quality of education through establishment of its own Hematology and Immunohematology laboratory.
